On-Screen Text

This is text that appears on-screen during gameplay, which can be purely instructional, written in the “voice of the system” and there to help steer the player through the tutorial or the body of the game; text such as Gather bonus items by completing special Bonus Missions! could appear the first time a player successfully completes a gameplay task. This is, in essence, the system addressing the player directly.

A similar, guiding function can be served by using the voice of a game character, or narrator, to say something that provides essential glue between the game and the story or supports the game without stopping proceedings. This could be dialogue spoken by an ally that basically covers the same game design instructional requirements as those illustrated in the example above. So a game character, instead of addressing the player directly, would address the player’s character by saying something like, Great, completing special Bonus Missions can get you some neat gadgets!
